Meet experimental and genre-bending musician and DJ, Xen.
Born and raised in Jerusalem, but now deeply rooted in Tel Aviv, Xen has established herself as a standout name within the capital’s ever-bustling and densely fertile scene. Her raw and punk rooted style, where synthesis tangles with nostalgia, has best been exemplified in her Xenophonia radio show on TederFM and releases on labels such as
Malka Tuti and Garzen Records.
The influences in Xen’s creative direction stem from her fascination for otherworldly entities that she feels strongly connected to from within. The cosmos, space, time and nature are all elements she considers as metaphors for the soul. Xen strives to transform the darker experiences of life into light via the waves of sonic healing and expression. In music terms, she looks to the female pioneers of early electronics and all that is odd in the ’80s…from classical music to the progression of wave to Hip-Hop and all the way back to Post-punk, Middle Eastern sounds and industrial. Xen draws from a wealth load of musical experience which can be traced back to her younger years as a choir and opera singer.
With Xen there is always new sonic terrain to investigate when she plays on her bass guitar. Her passion for music would intensify with age as she began experimenting with new sounds which eventually led her to recording with Dori Sadovnik of Red Axes.
Following her debut solo EP ‘Bells’ in 2015, Xen has gone onto flutter from project to project (with
Red Axes, Yovav Arzi and the soon to come Xen & The Levantines) finding praise with many luminaries such as Vladimir Ivkovic and Ivan Smagghe. Armed with exhilarating DJ set’s and both compelling hybrid and live extravaganzas there are many strings to Xen’s bow.
Future plans include an upcoming psychedelic album called Xen & The Levantines, a minimal wave dreamy Ep on Malka tuti, vocals on tracks by Simple Symmetry, Assaf Amdursky and Lamusa. Xen’s latest project is Xen & yogg, which is now in final mixes.
